Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
If you are having a technical problem accessing WebCT please do the following FIRST!
Go to WebCT at http://webct.wvstateu.edu and use the
"Check Browser" link.
Next use the "Browser Tuneup Page" at WebCT to make
sure you have all the plug ins required and all the browser settings correct.
Q: When will I be able to get into the WebCT sites for my courses in an upcoming semester?
A: The answer to this question varies depending on the type of course. No course needs to be open to students before the official start of the semester in question. To find those dates, you can go to the link called
Academic Calendar. on the right side of the Log in page. Course sites for Web100 and Web80 courses will be open the day those courses are set to start on the published course schedules. Other courses that are using WebCT (even Web50 courses) may not be using their WebCT sites at the start of the semester. WebCT sites that will be used at the beginning of the semester are usually up a week or two before those dates, but how much content is going to be available to students yet is going vary greatly from site to site. And note that while WebCT creates a course shell for all courses offered during the semester not all instructers use WebCT course sites. So unless you are in a course that has been designated on the published schedule as using WebCT, you still may want to check first with you instructor to see if the site is going to be used during that semester.
Q: I have an online chat for my class but it doesn't work. What do I do?
A: You need to install JAVA. Without JAVA installed the Chat and Whiteboard tools do not function.
There are other tools in WebCT that require JAVA also like the editor in email and in discussions.
JAVA can be downloaded for free from
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp.

A: This is caused by a firewall blocking either the server or the ports that the WebCT server uses.
