Online and Web Intensive CoursesWVSU Summer 2008 Online classesWVSCTC Summer 2008 Online classes WVSU Fall 2008 Online classes WVSCTC Fall 2008 Online classes To be listed one this page a course has to be offered Summer Semester 2008 of Fall Semester 2008 and be delivered at least 50% online. The courses listed fall into one of three categories: Web50, Web80, or Web1000. You probably get the drift of that, but a detailed explanation is given in the Key to Online Courses at the bottom of the page. To register for these courses, you follow the regular admission and registration procedures at WVSU or WVSCTC. Some of the courses may also require special permission from a department or your advisor. ITEC courses require an additional registration at the WV Excite web site. Online courses at WVSU and WVSCTC are taught using a course website program called WebCT. WebCT Tutorials and other assistance is available through links under Student Resources on the left of this page. To take a course on WebCT you will need (1) a computer that meets the minimum requirements for WebCT access, (2) an online service provider to reach the Internet when you are off-campus, and (3) you may need additional software specific to the course you are taking (a particular version of Microsoft Office in a course on how to use Microsoft Office, for instance) or meet higher computer requirements depending on the specific requirements of the course. A student enrolled and accepted in this course is NOT required to come to campus at all. You must have access to a computer and to the Internet to take this course because your entire grade will depend on work you can only perform by using the course WebCT site. A student enrolled and accepted in this course may be required to come to campus for an orientation session and possibly for a midterm and final. Or the examinations for the course may be taken oncampus in a computer lab. But there are no more than 4 campus meetings. You must have access to a computer and to the Internet to take this course because the great majority of your grade will depend on work you can only perform by using the course WebCT site. A student enrolled and accepted in this course will be required to come to campus for more than 4 class meetings. Normally, a Web50 course trades at least 50% of its traditional campus contact hours for online work with WebCT. You need full time access to a computer and to the Internet to take this course because 50% or more of your grade will depend on work you can only perform by using the course WebCT site. A course marked with this tab has an online component that accounts for less than 50% of the course grade. The meeting time and /or the number of class meetings may be reduced, depending on how much course can be down solely online. So in some cases, you may not need full time access to a computer and to the Internet to take a course like this, but there will be a significant portion of your graded work that you will only be able to perform on the course WebCT site. But you will at times find it crucial to have dependable access to a computer that has an Internet connection. A course tagged as Web10 uses its companion WebCT site to provide students course information of various sorts. But the course itself is delivered in a traditional face-to-face manner. A Web10 course site may contain such material as the course syllabus, assignments, additional readings or study guides, communication tools, and links to related web sites. There is no reduction in face-to-face meeting time or number of meetings due to use of the online resources. Often there are no graded assignments that require use of the course site. If there are such assignments, they account for no more than 10% of the course grade. When such limited graded assignments are required, alternative (non-online) versions of the assignments may be available for those who can demonstrate unusual difficulty in getting access to the WebCT course site. |
