

The purpose of the Department of Criminal Justice is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the criminal justice system and its interrelationship with society. The courses will give students an in-depth knowledge about the crime problem in this society, the perpetrators of crime, and the theoretical causes of crime. This foundation will prepare students for successful careers in law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole, juvenile justice, and social services, as well as graduate school and law school. Completion of the program will enhance opportunities for career advancement for those already in criminal justice careers.
The Department of Criminal Justice is committed to providing students with a knowledge of and sensitivity for multicultural, race, and gender issues within the criminal justice system, and the larger society.

Program Level Outcomes
The graduates of the Criminal Justice program will be able to:
1. Understand the theory, structure, and function of policing, courts, and corrections
2. Understand theories of crime and the relationship between theories, policies, programs, and research
3. Understand the historical development of the criminal justice system in the United States
4. Understand the constitutional rights of the citizens and the procedures to be followed by the criminal justice professionals when encountering citizens
5. Understand the processes and the effects of the three branches of government in relation to the criminal justice system
6. Understand the processes by which laws are made, enacted, and changed
7. Understand and evaluate ethical dilemmas faced by criminal justice professionals
8. Understand and evaluate criminal justice research and professional literature as well as strengths and limitations of quantitative and qualitative methods
9. Understand the hiring process of the criminal justice agencies
