

The purpose of the Department of Health and Human Performance is to prepare students and health professionals with the knowledge and skills to assume positions in delivering health, physical education, and recreation programs and services to communities schools, agencies, and businesses. The Department also promotes the concept of lifelong healthy living through positive health, wellness, and fitness practices among the faculty, staff, students, and community.
Consistent with this focus, the Department offers several different fields of study and courses in the health and human performance area. The Bachelor of Science degree is available in Health Science and in Recreation. Teaching specialization in Health Education and Physical Education are also available. Within these programs are a variety of minors, certifications, and emphases.
The Department also takes advantage of the beautiful outdoor resources available in West Virginia by offering leisure activity classes in fly fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, golf, backpacking, and rock climbing.

The Recreation Services curriculum (with 37-59 hours of required coursework in the discipline) consists of three components:
I. Planning and Programming (6 hours)
II. Leadership and Management (22 hours)
III. Marketing and Evaluation (9 hours)
The graduates of the Recreation program will be able to:
1. Develop and conduct evaluation of community leisure needs and recreational services [III]
2. Apply appropriate marketing strategies and techniques to promote recreational services, programs, and organization in various settings, namely commercial, public, private, and voluntary [III]
3. Demonstrate an understanding of, and subscribe to, the ethical principles and professionalism as applied to the field of leisure services [II]
4. Demonstrate the effective utilization of technology and computers in the practice of leisure services [I, II, III]
5. Demonstrate an understanding of legal issues and responsibilities related to policy formation and functions of recreational services and organizations [II]
