Black PotteryThe town of San Bartolo Coyotepec, like many of the other towns in Oaxaca, is home to artisans who work at a common art-form. In this case it is black pottery. Relying heavily on a natural technique discovered by the late Dona Rosa, which gives the pottery its lustrous shine, this town's pottery is world renowned. |

Valente, 70, has been working at his art for 55 years. At the age of 24, he was asked to take part in the reconstruction of the archaeological site at Monte Alban, a true honor for an artisan from Oaxaca, as well as a testament to his prowess. Note: If you plan to visit this town, you may want to take an extra suitcase. -Paul

In the village of San Martin Tilcajete, about 40 minutes from the city of Oaxaca, there are several houses with workshops where the families create Alebrijes (ali-bre-haze). These are colorful, whimsical animals carved from Copal wood that is native to Oaxaca, Mexico. No two pieces are ever alike because each piece is individually hand carved |
