Black Pottery

The town of San Bartolo Coyotepec, like many of the other towns in Oaxaca, is home to artisans who work at a common art-form. In this case it is black pottery. Relying heavily on a natural technique discovered by the late Dona Rosa, which gives the pottery its lustrous shine, this town's pottery is world renowned.

Valente, 70, has been working at his art for 55 years.  At the age of 24, he was asked to take part in the reconstruction of the archaeological site at Monte Alban, a true honor for an artisan from Oaxaca, as well as a testament to his prowess.  Note: If you plan to visit this town, you may want to take an extra suitcase.

Pictured here, Dona Rosa's son Valente, works with a piece of clay which will become a water pitcher.

Painted Animals

In the village of San Martin Tilcajete, about 40 minutes from the city of Oaxaca, there are several houses with workshops where the families create Alebrijes (ali-bre-haze). These are colorful, whimsical animals carved from Copal wood that is native to Oaxaca, Mexico. No two pieces are ever alike because each piece is individually hand carved

and then creatively and intricately painted with bright colors. This photograph clearly depicts the attention that is given to each piece.
