New Mail Server/Login Server FAQ

A new mail server and new login validation server will be implemented on December 16th 2007.

What do users need to do?

All currently functioning email clients should work without additional configuration.
If problems arise we will continue to update this area with information.

Why do we need a new mail server?

A new email campus email policy requires that campus email is the official method of communications.
Our current server cannot support the new policy as all students will be required to use their campus email.
This server is required in order to keep up with the ever increasing use of email.
The total number of received emails has almost doubled in the past year.
Currently the campus receives on average over 37,000 emails each day of which almost 90% are spam.
We have recorded over 60,000 emails in one day in the past.

What will the new server provide?

This is a more powerful enterprise level server which should help with the processing of increasing amounts of email.
The new server will provide the first steps to allow for single-sign on on campus.
A new web interface is provided replaced the antiquated one we have used for years.
The new web interface will allow users to easily change their password.
Remember, changing the password changes it for both email and Mystate
The server will allow for secure connections from your Email client of choice.
(Additional configuration of email client is required for secure connections.)
The new mail server supports sftp (secure ftp). Standard ftp is not supported on this server.

What changes will occur due to the new validation server?

Social Security numbers will no longer be acceptable for login to MyState.
Users will need to use either their student ID (A Number) or their campus email name as the Login ID in Mystate.
The email password and MyState password will be the same. The same login server will be used to validate both servers.
Students who use the IVR system (phone registration) will still use their student id and birth date pin. (This will not change).
Important Note: Once a user changes their password at https://email.wvstateu.edu that password becomes both their email and MyState password.
Once the password is changed the IVR (phone registration) password does not match the MyState password.
