Fred Astaire, The Man and His Music - Study Fred Astaire's career from its vaudeville beginnings with sister Adele, through his partnership with Ginger Rogers, to solo dancing in the 1940s. Enjoy liberal doses of the songs by Berlin, Porter and Kern that Astaire introduced.

Rodgers and Hammerstein - Oklahoma! ushered in a new era of musical theatre, setting a new world standard. Through lively discussion and video clips, explore the work of beloved American treasures Rodgers and Hammerstein, from Oklahoma! to The Sound of Music.

The Great Songwriters - During the 1920s and 1930s the songs we now call “standards” began to appear. Composers of this era remain household names among jazz and cabaret musicians. Examine the songs and lives of Gershwin, Porter, Kern, Arlen, Berlin and Rodgers.

Spring Training for Birders - Nestled in the heart of a migratory bird habitat, West Virginia's New River Gorge is a haven for warblers and those who watch them. Beginner to expert birders will learn identification skills, habitat needs and the ins and outs of protecting these spectacular neo-tropical migrants. A cadre of ornithologists, including syndicated columnists and luminaries of the birding world, will act as guides and teachers. Program includes opportunities to observe native birds from the river on a New River float trip through the scenic wooded gorge and by foot on National Park trails. Classroom topics include a bird identification workshop, bird banding, backyard birds and birding equipment optics.

Musical Theater - Study burlesque, minstrel shows, operettas, vaudeville extravaganzas, and early shows in which libretto and songs were truly integrated. We’ll also see how musical theater acquired a “darker” tone in the years after West Side Story.

Music and Memories of World War II - Explore the era of big band jazz and bobby socks, ration stamps and scrap drives, zoot suits, jitterbugs, and boogie woogie. Through stories songs, and film clips, we’ll make the music and memories of the World War II era spring to life.

Classical Disney Musicals - Explore the integration of music, story, dance and character in Disney’s animated feature length films. Examine the memorable musical scores of Snow White, Pinocchio, and Fantasia, referencing Neal Gabler’s Walt Disney: Triumph of the Imagination.

Art, Music, Theater – FestivALL Has it ALL - Embrace the excitement of FestivALL as you discover the vibrancy of Charleston’s thriving arts community. Begin each day with classroom discussions by the artists themselves as you explore the arts with local and regional experts. Then follow your whims as you stroll through streets filled with a wide variety of street art, live music, crafts, and theater. Watch performers on street stages, local thespians perform in theaters, or professional entertainers deliver dynamic musical programs. End the day by enjoying robust musical or theatrical performances. This arts festival includes community arts groups and nationally known entertainment in an unprecedented celebration of the arts in West Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region.

Rails, Trails, and Terrestrials of the West Virginia Highlands - Share the excitement of hearing a steam whistle and feeling the pulsing of pistons as you relive an era where steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. Then explore the world's largest steerable telescope, and discover why scientists from around the world come here to study astronomical objects from planets to quasars. Finish the week as you move to Snowshoe Mountain where you venture into the 10,000 acres of backcountry to discover scenic overlooks and a ghost town, climb a fire tower, and experience the flora and fauna native to the Allegheny Mountains. Cap off the week of adventures with a lively cookout and hoedown under a star-filled sky. Program includes two excursion train rides and a cross-country bike ride.

From Song To Symphony - Musical design made clear and simple – Learn how formal structure helps trigger our emotional responses to every kind of music from the Appalachian folk song to the Mozart Symphony.

The Making Of My Fair Lady - Follow the evolution of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion into the musical My Fair Lady. You’ll hear backstage stories, peer into the private lives of Shaw and Lerner, and discover why Julie Andrews wasn’t chosen to play Eliza in the film.

Riding the Rails: Four Vintage Train Rides Thru Brilliant Fall Colors - Enjoy vintage train rides in the heart of the WV mountains where sights and sounds of railroading in the wilderness provide memorable experiences. Ride four unique excursion trains featuring vintage passenger coaches, a little red caboose, and the only operating Edwards Rail Bus in the world. See operating Shay, Climax, and Heisler steam engines and experience two rides pulled by steam engines including the geared Shay engine designed to pull heavy logging trains up steep inclines. Rides include a variety of switchbacks, mountain vistas, and peaceful river gorges. Visit an operating train maintenance shop. Enjoy an evening of railroad songs and a mountain theater production. Includes field trip to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

That’s the message brought to this writer’s clinic led by a capable, published author and inspiring teacher. Designed for beginning and experienced writers who want to develop their writing skills in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or essays. Leader will provide structured exercises, dynamic discussion, independent writing opportunities, and a chance to discuss your work. Then immerse yourself in the works of others as you attend seminars led by local and nationally recognized authors, poetry readings, used book sale, and more at the WV Book Festival. Program includes special sessions on collecting books, storytelling techniques, and living history portrayals of well known authors.

WV International Film Festival, Film Production, and More - Broaden your film watching enjoyment through the study of independent and international films produced outside the Hollywood system. College staff with first hand experiences in writing, animating, directing, and producing full-length award winning films, will lead daytime discussions about animation styles and techniques, film production from beginning to end, narrative styles encountered when viewing foreign films, adapting literary works to film, and the impact films can have on influencing the public perception of a region. In the evenings, you will attend nine recently released, critically acclaimed, culturally diverse, domestic and foreign language feature films at the West Virginia International Film Festival.
